This project was completed in two major phases spanning several years, ultimately transforming what was once the most neglected area of the property into one of its most beautiful and functional spaces.
The first phase, completed roughly five years ago, centered around the construction of a custom gazebo positioned as a focal point of the property. Set on an adjacent lot later purchased by the homeowner, the gazebo sits perfectly framed by mature olive trees and overlooks sweeping ocean and Channel Islands views. The craftsmanship in the structure is evident in the fine roof detailing, trim work, windows, doors, and the gravel perimeter that grounds the space naturally within the landscape. This gazebo has since been featured in multiple magazines and high-profile publications and remains a defining architectural element of the property.
The second and more recent phase focused on rebuilding a failing hillside walkway and garden area along the side of the home. Previously, this section consisted of deteriorating railroad ties and unstable steps that were unsafe and unusable. We replaced the entire pathway with massive Oklahoma Cherokee Flagstone treads—each over six inches thick, approximately three feet wide, and set with deep, stable runs. The steps were carefully stacked and blended with locally sourced Santa Barbara sandstone cobble, hand-chiseled and fitted tightly along the edges to create a natural yet refined look.
To address erosion and drainage on the slope, we installed a dry creek system designed to capture and manage runoff as water moves down the hill. Planting areas were refreshed with new mulch, gorilla hair, and lush plantings to stabilize the slope while softening the stonework. The color palette was intentionally selected to blend seamlessly with the home’s existing tile patio and surrounding landscape.
Lighting played a major role in elevating the finished space. Modern, angular fixtures were chosen to complement the home’s architecture and positioned slightly back from the walkway edges. At night, they cast light across the tops of the sandstone cobble, creating layered shadows and depth along the steps. Additional uplighting was added to select plant trunks, producing a soft wall-wash effect across the garage façade—transforming what would otherwise be a plain white wall into a dramatic visual feature after dark.
We also addressed several functional details throughout the project, including modifying the driveway curb for easier access to the trash enclosure. This area was rebuilt with flagstone, screened with a custom fence, and thoughtfully designed to keep utilities and storage tucked discreetly out of view. Nearby seating areas and upper walkways were integrated into the overall flow, creating a series of quiet, secluded spaces that feel intentional and inviting.
From above, the property reveals how the gazebo anchors the landscape while the new stone pathways weave naturally through the hillside. Ocean views, sailboats in the harbor, layered plantings, and carefully placed lighting all work together to create a space that feels both elevated and timeless.
This project successfully transformed the least functional and least attractive area of the site into one of its most striking features—blending craftsmanship, durability, and natural beauty into a space that will last for decades.
This space reveals itself step by step.
Heavy stone treads descend naturally with the hillside, each one hand-fit and grounded into the terrain. Locally sourced sandstone cobble adds texture and warmth along the edges, softening the geometry and reinforcing the natural grade.
As the sun sets, subtle landscape lighting brings the garden to life—shadows stretch across stone, plant textures come forward, and the garage wall fades into a warm, ambient backdrop. What was once overlooked is now immersive, quiet, and intentional.
