Time Matters: How Long Does a Typical Landscaping Project Take?

One of the most common questions we hear from new clients is: "How long will this take?" The honest answer is — it depends. Project timelines vary widely based on scope, complexity, permitting, and site conditions. Here's a realistic breakdown of what to expect at each stage.

Planning Phase

The planning phase — design consultations, site analysis, CAD drawings, 3D rendering, and permit applications — can take anywhere from a few weeks for simple projects to several months for complex designs. Permitting timelines in particular are largely outside anyone's direct control and can vary significantly by jurisdiction.

Site Assessment and Preparation

Once permits are approved, work begins with site preparation: demolition of existing features, grading, and rough earthwork. This phase establishes the foundation for everything that follows. For smaller properties, it may take just a few days; larger or more complex sites can take several weeks.

Hardscaping Phase

Hardscape installation — retaining walls, patios, walkways, concrete work, decking — is typically the most time-intensive phase. Depending on the scope, this can range from two weeks to two months. Work is sequential: structural elements must cure before adjacent features can be built.

Softscaping Phase

Planting, sod installation, and mulching follow hardscaping. This phase moves relatively quickly — often one to two weeks — though larger planting schemes with specimen trees and complex arrangements take longer.

Technical Systems

Irrigation, drainage, and lighting systems are typically installed during hardscaping and softscaping phases, but final connections and testing add time. Expect one to two weeks for a full systems installation and commissioning.

Finishing Touches and Cleanup

Final grading, edge detailing, cleanup, and a walkthrough with the client cap off every project. This phase is brief — typically two to three days — but it's what transforms a construction site into a finished landscape.
